The Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse will open to the public on May 24th, 2014, for a special Open House event celebrating the 117th anniversary of the lighting of the lamp. Keeper William A. Lane lit the lamp for the first time on May 24th, 1897, and Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse has been guiding mariners into Portland Harbor ever since.
The lighthouse will be open from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm and tickets for the event may be purchased that day at the ticket shed at the foot of the breakwater at Fort Preble on the campus of Southern Maine Community College in South Portland. Admission will be $5.00. This special event precedes the regular open house events, which begin June 14th and continue each weekend through early September.
Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse is unique in that it is the only lighthouse of its type accessible to the public from land via the breakwater. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to explore the interior of a working lighthouse and learn how the lighthouse functions and how the keepers lived while on duty.
